A formative evaluation of the Prairie Science Class
| Summary | The Prairie Science Classroom uses a local prairie wetlands ecosystem as an integrating and motivating environmental learning context for fifth grade students. The evaluation was designed to document outcomes for stakeholders and to support decisions regarding program continuation and expansion. Evaluation questions examined participating students’ academic achievement; their science, problem solving, technology, and cooperative learning skills; their attitudes toward learning and toward the prairie wetlands environment; and their stewardship ethic. Data were gathered from a variety of stakeholders using quantitative and qualitative methods. Data collection was undertaken using standardized tests, pretests, posttests, retrospective pretests, and interviews. The evaluation will be used to support decisions regarding program continuation and expansion, to identify areas where the program can be improved, and to track progress made toward program goals. |
