Description
CHEAKS was designed to assess the environmental attitudes and knowledge of elementary to middle school aged children.  The scale consists of 66 items divided into two subscales: Attitude and Knowledge. The Attitude subscale is comprised of 36 items which sample equally from 6 content domains: animals, water, recycling, energy, pollution, and general issues.  Children as asked to rate each item on a 5-point Likert scale of very true, mostly true, not sure, mostly false, and very false.  Of the Attitude items, 12 reflect verbal commitment to a future environmentally responsible behavior, 12 measure actual commitment to ERB, and 12 measure affect.  The Knowledge subscale consists of 30 items which draw equally from the 6 content areas mentioned above.
Scoring
The most proenvironmental attitude response on each item received a score of 5 while the least proenvironmental attitude received a score of 1. The range of scores on the Attitude subscale is thus 36 to 180. Knowledge questions answered correctly received a score of 6. The possible range of scores on the Knowledge subscale is 0 to 180.
The total possible range of scores on CHEAKS is 36 to 360.
